Design for Sustainability

The criteria driving our cable design for sustainability strategy is based on:

  • Carbon footprint: cradle-to-gate kg/CO2 per cable weight A1-3
  • Potential recyclability: weight of recyclable materials at end of life C1-4
  • Hazardous substances: SVHC of total cable weight 
  • Recycle input rate: weight of recycled materials in cable 
  • Transmission efficiency: usage stage B1
  • Environmental benefits: stage D

SWEDEN

100% recycled filler

Since 2019, the Nässjö factory in Sweden has been using PE filler for their medium-voltage AXALJ-TT 12-36 kV cable series of 100% recycled material. 

The solution was developed together with a local supplier in order to reduce the carbon-footprint of the factory's raw materials. Annually, the factory use between 60-100 tonnes of this filler compound.

"We are constantly trying to find solutions that improve our sustainability and this is a step in the right direction," says Jimmy Ward, Purchasing Manager for Prysmian Group Scandinavia.

SWEDEN

90% recycled outer sheathing

In spring of 2023, Prysmian Sweden introduced 90% recycled black outer sheathing for their 3-core AXLJ-RMF 12-36 kV cables and shortly after also for their screened 3-core version AXALJ-TT 12-24 kV. The recycled material constitutes 30-31% of all plastics in the cables.

Both cables are part of Prysmian Group's Eco Cable Concept, whereby they are accompanied with environmental documentation according to six international and recognizable evaluation criteria.

It is estimated that the factory will use 300 tonnes of the recycled material in 2023 alone.

NETHERLANDS

Bio-based insulation

Prysmian Netherlands has introduced a sustainable low-voltage cable concept under the name of E-LINE, that aims to introduce new products every year. The portfolio currently contain below products.

The wires are made with PVC insulation of plasticized bio-based compound as well as 100% recycled copper conductor. 

  • VD E-LINE 750V Eca wires from 1,5 - 2,5 mm2  with -32% less CO2-emissions compared to standard version.
     
  • PROFIT E-LINE wire in tube (with VD) from 1,5 - 2,5 mm2 with -21% less CO2-emissions compared to standard version.

SWEDEN

36% recycled copper conductor

Prysmian Sweden has introduced ACEFLEX Eco Cable Pure 0,6/1 kV an installation cable that is produced with 36% recycled copper conductor from a recognized supplier.

This reduces the cable's CO2 footprint and qualifies it for Prysmian Group's environmental Eco Cable concept - a marking reserved for products with a lower environment impact compared to our standard cable range.

The product is accompanied by both a Eco Cable datasheet as well as EPD documentation.

 

NETHERLANDS

100% recycled copper conductor

Prysmian Netherlands has introduced their own environmental brand called E-Line that presently include:

  • VD 750 V Eca installation wire with 100% recycled copper conductor and PVC insulation of plasticized bio-based compound - contributing to a -32% CO2 reduction compared with the standard version.
     
  • PROFIT wire in tube using VD E-Line - contributing to a -21% CO2  reduction.
