Water

OVERVIEW

Reduction and circularity

As part of Prysmian's integrated sustainability strategy, factories focus on water reduction and circularity in their value chain..

Water is used in the production process to cool cables after extrusion, as extrusion is performed at high temperatures to cross-link different layers of material.

Especially MV and HV cables require more water cooling that for example fiber optical cables.

2022 KEY FIGURES

Water consumption

Globally, Prysmian reduced its water consumption by -10,3% in 2022 compared to the previous year.

In North Europe factories achieved a significant -32,3% reduction in their water consumption (m3) in addition to water efficiency per (m3/ton) of cables produced:

  • Nässjö (Sweden)                       5,211    (0.28)
  • Drammen (Norway)              264,542    (65.8)
  • Emmen (Holland)                   30,003    (0.49)
  • Delft (Holland)                        18,462    (1.09)
  • New Bergen (Holland)                 654    (0.22)

  • Keila (Estland)                          9,389    (0.46)

RECYCLING

Water circularity

Process water for cooling is fully or partially recycled in most of Prysmian's factories. In fact, 71% of all factories recycle over 90% of their process water.

Factories continuously monitor water consumption and report key figures according to GRI 303 in connection with ISO 14000 certification and various ESG indices, where CDP ranked Prysmian B- for water management in 2022

According to TCFD guidelines, Prysmian also prepare a water stress estimate up to 2040, which indicate that 25% of the factories are located in areas with an extremely high risk of water shortage.

UN SDG 6

WASH pledge

On a corporate level, Prysmian has signed a WASH 4 Work pledge committing to implement a certain level of access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene - across all company locations within three years.

This will ensure that all factories implement "best practices" for water along the entire value chain and that we as a company live up to UN Sustainable Development Goal 6 - pertaining to water.
