Reuse of cable drums

Globally, Prysmian Group reused 50% of all cable drums in 2022 - of which 73% were made of wood and remaining 27% of metal and plastic.

This environmentally friendly practice yields substantial benefits, as a wooden cable drum, on average, can be reused up to 8 times before being scrapped. For metal and plastic drums, the potential lifespan is even longer with a higher return-rate.

Drum returns are primarily handled by external logistics companies with an extensive local presence. For larger projects, Prysmian local subsidiaries arrange for delivery and collection of empty cable drums according to contractual agreements.

NORTH EUROPE

75-95% return-rate

For numerous years, North Europe factories have provided local drum-return programs for its customers' empty drums from size K6 to K30 - with following results from 2021:
 

  • Nässjö (Sweden)  - 95% drum return rate
     
  • Emmen (Netherlands) - goal of achieving 100% drum return rate 
     
  • Delft (Netherlands) - 80% drum return rate
     
  • Pikkala and Oulu (Finland) - 55% for small drums, 75% for medium drums and 85% for large drums
     
  • Keila (Estonia) - 83% drum return rate and a reuse rate of 74%
     
  • Drammen (Norway) - 23% return rate for small drums K7-11 and an 81% return rate for larger drums K12-26
     
  • Denmark (sales office) - 80% drum return rate from projects

Certified wood

At Prysmian Group, we support legal and sustainable deforestation for the benefit of the environment and therefore request environmental documentation from our suppliers of new wooden drums in connection with procurement agreements.
