Chemicals

OVERVIEW

Protection of people and planet

REACH and RoHS are EU legislation that restrict and regulate hazardous chemical in products. They are on certain issues overlapping, however, in principle they are designed to be complementary.

The difference between the two is that REACH evaluate at a homogeneous material level for all chemicals on the SHVC List, while RoHS evaluate at a product level (for electronics and electrical equipment) for 10 chemicals.

EU REGULATION

What is REACH ?

REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) is EU's chemicals legislation that regulates the manufacture and use of chemicals in the EU. The regulation entered into force in 2007 and aims to ensure that products sold in the EU do not harm either the environment or humans.

REACH has reversed the burden of proof and requires all manufacturers and importers to provide information about the chemistry they use in their products, including information about the environmental and health hazardous properties of chemical substances.

Companies are obliged to register products and packaging materials containing chemicals from the SVHC list - if one or more substance in the product exceeds 0.1%.

The SVHC List is administered by ECHA ( European Chemical Agency).

EU DIRECTIVE

What is RoHS ?

RoHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) is an EU directive from 2006 that restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electronics and electrical equipment (EEE) and equipment being manufactures or sold in the European market.

RoHS also aims to prevent the risks posed by the environment and humans related to the management of EEE waste under the WEEE directive. RoHS prohibits products if they contain hazardous substances in a concentration higher than the threshold of:

  • Cadmium (Cd): < 100 ppm
  • Lead (Pb): < 1000 ppm
  • Mercury (Hg): < 1000 ppm
  • Hexavalent Chromium: (Cr VI) < 1000 ppm
  • Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB): < 1000 ppm
  • Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE): < 1000 ppm
  • Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP): < 1000 ppm
  • Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP): < 1000 ppm
  • Dibutyl phthalate (DBP): < 1000 ppm
  • Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP): < 1000 ppm

FOCUS ON

Cleaning & maintenance

Besides eliminating hazardous chemicals from our products, we also focus on removing hazardous chemicals in our factories, and replace these with more sustainable alternatives, less harmful to people and the environment.

Prysmian factory in Nässjö (Sweden) has analyzed products for unwanted chemicals such as skin creams, soaps, cleaning fluids, auto shampoo, lubricants, rust removers, primers, glues, sprays, oils and fire extinguishers.

Subsequently, they have been able to replace 20 products with more sustainable alternatives thus, eliminated the use of 15 chemicals harmful to humans and the environment.
